Corridor girls diamond squads make regionals

Steven Vetter - The I-70 Corridor’s softball prowess is on the rise after two groups of girls qualified for regionals of a nationally-sanctioned summer event.
The Corridor Girls Softball Association and Colorado are being represented in the Babe Ruth Softball Midwest Plains Regional Tournament in Monett Mo., July 17-20, by the 12-and-under state champions CGSA KAOS and 10-and-under state runner-up CGSA All-Stars.
KAOS went 7-1 at the state tournament in Greenwood Village, avenging its only loss to Lamar with a 4-3 victory in the first championship game and an 8-7 come-from-behind win in the if-necessary title tilt.
“Lamar was undefeated in the double elimination bracket, and [KAOS] winning the first game forced the if-necessary game,” said KAOS parent Hollee Swain. “KAOS was down 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning in the last game, but scored six runs to win the state championship.”
KAOS led up to the championship games with wins of 15-0 and 7-2 over Englewood/Southeast Denver, respectively, a 2-1 loss to Lamar, and wins of 6-1, 7-1 and 21-11 over Elizabeth, Castle Rock and Southern Plains, respectively.
KAOS’ Victoria Wilson was presented with the State Commissioner’s Award for sportsmanship.
Other team members are Erin Adams, Jessie Bonds, Lisa Dodge, Kayla Fredrich, Logan Losh, Dani Klein, Stevi Krier, Savannah Lewis, Rikki Spence, Riley Spence, and Heather Swain and Jayden Wakeham.
10-and-under
Despite a 3-2 record and a second place finish at state in Burlington, the 10-and-under All-Stars also qualified for regionals.
CGSA opened with a 10-9 win over Castle Rock and defeated East Central (Burlington) 14-4 in game two before losing to Lamar 5-2. CGSA defeated Castle Rock a second time in the semifinals, before losing 16-6 to Lamar in the championship game.
Player of the Game awards were presented to CGSA players Alyson Crandall, game 1; Caylin Arnold, game 2; Kaitlyn Hanks, game 3; Alyssa Yoshida, game 4; and Sarah Cubbage, game 5.
Crandall was also named Top Hitter for the tournament and CGSA’s Dave Cubbage was named Best Coach.
Other team members are Liesel Sims, Tailor McClain, Shay Miller, Madison Hamacher, Dakota Stotyn, Chandler Babi, Jacee Dinius and Morgan Elliott. Assistant coaches are Tonya Hanks and Jeff Dinius.
“This is the first year that any CGSA team has won more than one game at the state level. To have two teams finish in the top two is awesome,” Hollee Swain said.
As of July 19, KAOS had gone 2-1 in pool play at regionals and advanced to final four tournament play.
The 10-and-under All-Stars ended their season 1-2 in regional pool play.

Bennett grad wins rodeo scholarship

Steven Vetter - DENVER — Dillon Lewis, a 2008 graduate of Bennett High School, was recently awarded the WW Livestock Systems dealer’s scholarship of $250 at the Colorado State/Provincial High School Finals Rodeo held in Lamar June 11-15.
“The (National High School Rodeo Association) is very proud to have WW Livestock Systems as a national corporate partner. It is the sponsorship support the NHSRA receives from its valuable partners that allow it to assist with the development of dedication, leadership, responsibility and commitment in today’s young people,” said NHSRA Executive Director Ken Sturman.
“Youth are not only the future of the livestock business, but also the future of this great country. There isn’t a finer group of young people than those represented by the members of the NHSRA,” said Pat Carhart of WW Livestock Handling Systems.

Batting cages proposed at 'Burg baseball field

Marissa Hauser - STRASBURG — The Strasburg Metro Parks & Recreation District board swore in members, appointed officers, and heard reports from personnel at its meeting May 19.
David Wentz and Lonnie Losh, already board members and the only candidates, were sworn in for another term, and later, the board voted to keep in place its current officers including Dave Spiller, president; Wentz, vice president; Cindy Fahey, treasurer; and Margie Laurita, secretary.
SMPRD director Torri Schultz said she is hopeful the district can soon get started on the bid package for improvements at Five Acre Park, which will include two playing fields, a playground, lights, and an irrigation system.
The district’s surveyor is developing a topographic map of the park, which is needed by the engineer to complete a location and extent report. The report must be submitted to Arapahoe County before the package can be compiled.
Schultz also traveled to the district’s Turner Park with maintenance director Jay Brigham recently to identify property lines on the 46-acre tract south of Strasburg. They were unsuccessful, but the construction of walking trails at the site will occur when the lines are located.
ACTIVITIES REPORT
Angie Graf, the district’s new activities director, said she is working to make SMPRD’s logo more recognizable by displaying it on all recreation district apparel and letterhead. She is also focused on updating and improving the district’s Web site. Courses, organized by age group, can now be viewed online.
“That’s going to be my biggest push,” Graf said. “We’re going to try to start steering people to the Web site.”
Newly added programs include Wednesday workshops for the summer session, which will offer activities for children ages 4-12.
An activities guide is also in the works, Graf said.
MAINTENANCE REPORT
Brigham reported that the new restrooms at Lyons Park have been opened and are available for use, and that sprinkler repair and grass fertilization has taken place on all district properties. Crushed granite was used to temporarily fix holes in the parking lot at the district’s main park.
“It’s a temporary fix, but I am thrilled to say it is still holding,” he said.
Brigham expounded upon a number of other maintenance-related activities, including the removal of scrap metal and the placement of several unused district items on the Craig’s List Web site.
In other business, Spiller reported that the Strasburg School District and local American Legion baseball teams would like to install batting cages near the bullpen on the district’s north baseball field.
The entities are willing to cost share and the recreation district is looking into the price tag.
